Forensic engineer assessing building damage on site

What Is Forensic Engineering?

Forensic engineering is the investigation of building and structural issues to determine what went wrong, why it happened, and how it can be addressed.

Our engineers carry out detailed inspections, assess construction methods and site conditions, and analyse evidence to identify the root cause of damage or failure. Findings are documented in clear, professional reports that stand up to scrutiny.

Typical matters include:

  • Structural cracking and building movement

  • Construction defects and workmanship issues

  • Storm, flood, fire or impact damage

  • Subsidence and foundation failures

Who Needs a Forensic Engineering Report?

You may require a forensic engineering assessment if you are:

  • A homeowner dealing with unexplained cracking or movement

  • A builder or developer facing a defect claim

  • An insurer assessing cause and extent of damage

  • A solicitor involved in a construction or property dispute

  • A body corporate managing structural concerns

What We Investigate

Our forensic engineering investigations commonly cover:

  • Structural cracking in walls, slabs and footings

  • Building movement and subsidence

  • Retaining wall and structural failures

  • Structural adequacy of existing buildings

Forensic Engineering FAQs

Do I need a forensic engineer?

If you have cracking, movement, a failed structural element, a building inspection that flagged a structural defect, or a dispute over what caused damage, a forensic engineer can establish the cause and the fix.

What will the report tell me?

What went wrong, why it happened, who or what is responsible, and the recommended rectification – written clearly enough to use for a repair, an insurance claim or a dispute.

How much does a forensic report cost?

It depends on the site and how much investigation is needed. A preliminary report is a lower fixed fee; a detailed forensic report costs more. We give you a clear quote before we start.

Can you act as an expert witness?

Yes. We prepare independent expert reports and can give evidence at tribunal or court, including QCAT in Queensland.

How soon can you inspect?

Most inspections are booked within a few days across Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich and the Gold Coast, with the written report following shortly after, depending on complexity and any testing required.
